Making Vancouver Safer and Healthier

Everyone deserves to feel safe in Vancouver. The COVID-19 pandemic has hit us all hard and we all have seen changes in our neighbourhoods. As a result, many people feel safe, but many do not. We have taken strong measures to ensure everyone feels safe.

To help those who have fallen on hard times, we opened a record 1,600 units of social housing last year alone, became the first major city in Canada to decriminalize drugs and deliver safe supply, and opened nearly 60 complex care homes.

To tackle violent crime, we have supported and fully funded the Vancouver Police Department.

However, there is still so much more that we need to do.

Support Neighbours in Need

We will:

Create the Health and Addictions Response Team (HART) – a new service enabling residents and businesses to call 311 to dispatch specially trained wellness teams to compassionately assist those in difficulty
Expand access to safe supply and peer-led compassion clubs
Add 50 new public washrooms across the city
Continue to directly fund graffiti abatement work through business improvement associations

Provide Housing

We will:

Work with senior levels of government to acquire all privately-owned, single room occupancy hotels
Prioritize housing for seniors, people with disabilities, and Indigenous, Black and People of Colour
Use Empty Homes Tax proceeds to provide homes for women and children fleeing violence and support Indigenous-led housing projects
Provide City-owned land for permanent and temporary modular housing sites

Improve Safety

We will:

Create the Mayor’s Permanent Advisory Committee to Eliminate Hate
Open new Office for the Night Time Economy with a focus on safety for women, Indigenous, Black and People of Colour and 2SLGBTQ+ residents
Support Vancouver Fire and Rescue Service Darkhorse report recommendations
Fully fund Vancouver Police Board budget requests

Help fund the court challenge to end the at-large voting system!
