Alvin Singh
Candidate for City Council
I was born and raised in East Van to immigrant parents from Fiji. Like many people, my parents came to Vancouver to build a better life for their family and worked hard every day to be able to afford a house and pay for my sisters’ and my education.
I am proud to still call East Van home and want to ensure that it continues to be a welcoming, accessible neighbourhood for newcomers and young families. However, skyrocketing housing costs and climate change pose significant threats to affordability and the long-term wellbeing of our city.
For the past 20 years, I’ve worked to address these challenges. I started out as a student activist where I worked with students, teachers and parents on a successful campaign to earthquake-proof all public schools in B.C. As the chair of the City of Vancouver’s first-ever Renters Advisory Committee, I fought to expand affordable housing and protect renters’ rights. And during my time at the David Suzuki Foundation, I worked to secure a constitutional right to live in a healthy environment.
Working in the Mayor’s Office for the past four years has given me tremendous insight into how civic government works and reinforced for me the importance of having a united council that can work collaboratively to achieve progress on the issues that matter most to Vancouverites.
I’m running with Forward Together because I want to continue to support Kennedy Stewart’s vision for an affordable, sustainable, caring, and prosperous Vancouver.
Alvin understands the urgency of Vancouver’s toxic drug crisis and I know we can count on him to help save lives and expand housing.
